Tuolumne (Two-all-ah-me) County is located in Northern California and is one of the less populated counties. Located in the Sierra Nevada, Tuolumne County is probably best known as the location of Yosemite National Park. While the valley is located in Mariposa County, much of the Park is in Tuolumne County. In fact, wildflower-studded Tuolumne Meadows (a subalpine meadow), located on Highway 120 is the second most visited spot in Yosemite. Located within easy reach of Tuolumne Meadows is the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River, Hetch Hetchy Reservoir (an engineering feat), and the Tuolumne Grove of giant Sequoia trees. Tuolumne County is also home to the two highest passes through the Sierra Nevada through which immigrants came to California's gold fields. Tioga Pass, which is part of Yosemite, is almost 10,000 feet and Sonora Pass, along beautiful Highway 108, is nearly 9,000 feet. These passes are even higher than those of the Swiss Alps. Often referred to as a Playland with a Heart of Gold, Tuolumne County has something for everyone. Skiing in the winter, nature photography, hiking, bicycling, antique shopping, mule packing adventures, fishing, boating, gold prospecting and panning. . .all in good, clear mountain air.
